Great question, sorry I don't have a fuller answer! Father, what would be some of the differences between the way the Greeks and the Romans kept nine days in remembrance of the dead and our novena for the dead? I am interesting in knowing the intentions behind their practice.
By intention I mean to say did they feel that keeping these nine days was a way to appease the gods? Did they keep these nine days because they felt that their were aiding the soul in thethe afterlife? If so, what wasis their viewpractice of thethe afterlife? Also, what exactly did they pray and what rituals did they engage in during this time? I appreciate any answers or information regarding these questions. It would be helpful to know how to explain to others how our novena for the dead is different from the Greek and Roman nine day observances for the dead.

In addition to praying for things we want to have happen, novenas also can be a way of letting go. Author Susan Tassone writes about purgatory and notes the importance of novenas for the deceased. So, we have a novena of Masses, or nine consecutive Masses or the Gregorian Masses, which are 30 consecutive Masses for the deceased soul.
Novenas may seem like a lot of work; remembering to pray every day for nine days can be a real challenge with our hectic lifestyles. Yet, the benefits far outweigh the costs. This is especially true when we participate in communal novenas such as those said in informal groups or ongoing novenas in parishes.
For some time, novenas have lurked in the background of our popular piety. The relationship with God Himself is essential, and a novena reminds us that the relationship takes time.
Novenas can be made to God and any of His three Persons in the Trinity. They are also often made to the Blessed Mother or to saints, asking their intercession for our intention, thereby strengthening our petition to God. All of the holy men and women in Heaven including our faithful loved ones are good intercessors for any intentions. Father Mitch Pacwa recommends three essential elements for the use of novenas: First, the prayers are specific , which helps us make our needs before God specific without telling God how to answer our prayer.
We also celebrate the Octaves of Christmas and Easter, which include the feast days themselves and the seven days that follow, to highlight the joy of these mysteries. The origin of the novena in our Church's spiritual treasure is hard to pinpoint. The Old Testament does not indicate any nine-days celebration among Jewish people. On the other hand, in the New Testament at the Ascension scene, our Lord gives the Apostles the Great Commission, and then tells them to return to Jerusalem and to await the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Together they devoted themselves to constant prayer" Acts , Nine days later, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost. Perhaps, this "nine-day period of prayer" of the Apostles is the basis for the novena. Long before Christianity, the ancient Romans also celebrated nine days of prayers for various reasons. The author Livy recorded how nine days of prayer were celebrated at Mount Alban to avert some evil or wrath of the gods as predicted by soothsayers.
Similarly, nine days of prayer were offered when some "wonder" had been predicted. Families also held a nine-day mourning period upon the death of a loved one with a special feast after the burial on the ninth day.
The Romans also celebrated the parentalia novendialia, a yearly novena February remembering all departed family members. Since novenas were already part of Roman culture, it is possible that Christianity "baptized" this pagan practice.
