I think they mostly did this as a way to bring other pet types closer to Spirit Beasts in terms of performance. Again, if it was just a typo, why not just fix the typo?

But instead they changed it to match a typo? It never should have went live in its current state. Why they let it persist the entirety of the expansion is beyond me. I can't get spirit heal or eternal guardian to work. Mend Pet heals the Hunter for thanks to the leech. It also buffs Exhiliration, healing for Spirit Mend does not heal enough to make up for it in my opinion.

The only exception is if there is a big aoe nuke and you will need the extra max hp, and damage reduction to survive.
