Overall thoroughly entertaining series of movies that we will enjoy as we grow. Had useful details 1. Read my mind 1. Parent Written by Jabeen Z. January 5, The disturbing aspect of the movie was when Katniss was constantly unable to uphold her morality and loyality in choosing who she wants to be intimately involved with , switching back and forth between Gale and Peeta. This is not a good role model for girls, and boys too because Gale is eventually not so bothered if Katniss is displaying affection for Peeta.
The issue of violence depends upon what part of the world you are from. Helped me decide. Had useful details. Better than the first! It was such a fabulous movie! However, it was violent and disturbing, but then again, that is the point. A mature teenager would benefit if the right conversation is happening at home. An elementary kid has no business watching this film. Conversations about kindness, empathy, and moral values can easily happen regarding this movie. I felt this movie did not have as many disturbing killing scenes but the deaths that happened did tug at your heart.
It was less ruthless than the first with more emotions involved. Read my mind. Adult Written by greasyfamily1 June 27, Very mature for a family watching!!
My family watched this and there was a scene with mutant monkeys! Multiple scenes have characters who drink, pepsi and coke included, and their outfits in the arena are torn from who even knows what!
Adult Written by Spixmacaw October 13, Disapoitment for Katniss She has to do the games all over again. Luckily she survives. Adult Written by James Hedrick July 4, Best in the Series The Hunger Games Catching Fire is easily the best in the four film series, or at least equal to the first one. Also staying true to the story of the book, it effectively builds on the first one while also bringing original elements which is what any good equal should do.
My only complaints remain that the age recommendation is too young. The second is more violent than the first and shares all the same dark thematic material that made it difficult at times. I would recommend this strongly for seventeen and up. Adult Written by egn June 19, When a film is made on the big-budget scale like "Catching Fire," the eventual rating from the MPAA is factored into how the movie is made. In the case of the new "Hunger Games" movie, most of the violence takes place bloodlessly and just before a cut or during a quick take.
These are common strategies that have kept movies like "The Lord of the Rings" and the more recent James Bond movies from earning an R, which would ultimately cut into ticket sales. People looking to consider "Catching Fire" for that honor could look to the point-blank executions, bludgeoning or the bloody, public lashing for a pretty compelling case without even citing the deaths in the arena, which include Katniss shooting an arrow into a man's chest and the Tributes impaling mutated apes.
For the MPAA's part, their guidelines distinguishing PG and R ratings on their website are more specific in terms of what sexual content merits more restriction. It's made clear, for example, that more than one use of a "harsher sexually derived word" as an expletive results in an automatic R. Depending on the age of your kid, you can discuss everything from the gluttony of privilege to the seeds of revolution to the need for people to stand up for others. Katniss continues to be brave, selfless, and resourceful; she wants to save Peeta even if it costs her life.
Peeta in turn wants to do the same for Katniss; he's kind and giving. Gale is a loving friend who wants to help Katniss recognize her potential as a symbol for the revolution.
Haymitch is an alcoholic but looks out for Katniss and Peeta; Cinna offers Katniss sympathy and support. Other allies sacrifice themselves to help Katniss and Peeta. Characters demonstrate perseverance and self-control. Like the original, Catching Fire contains violence in the Games and out of it, though quick edits avoid the most brutal moments. The Games consist of previous Victors, so the youngest contestants are year-old Katniss and Peeta. Government "Peacekeepers" viciously torture Gale, strike Katniss, and kill civilians throughout the Districts some deaths occur just off camera.
A black market is ransacked and Katniss' loved ones are threatened. During the Games, the contestants are stabbed, poisoned, drowned and killed in various ways.
Katniss, Finnick, and Peeta are covered in boils after being exposed to a poisonous fog. There are a few moments like when the monkey muttations attack that will make audiences jump in their seats. There are also several scenes of people in the Districts rioting. More kisses all around for Katniss, who kisses both Gale and Peeta a few times each -- one scene with Peeta is particularly passionate. As in the book, Johanna Mason strips naked only her shoulders and others' reactions are visible in front of Haymitch, Katniss, and Peeta after flirting with Peeta and asking "What's it like to have everyone in the Capitol want to sleep with you?
More language than the original, including "s--t," and bleeped out use of Johanna's "f--k" filled tirade on the Caesar Flickerman show. No brands featured in the movie, but the film has merchandise tie-ins including apparel, accessories, nail polish, games, and figurines.
Haymitch is known for drinking excessively and is often shown drinking or with a drink in his hand. Katniss takes a swig after bad news. People drink at Capitol parties, and one Capitol partier offers Peeta a drink that will make him vomit so he can keep eating. The District 6 Tributes are called "The Morphlings," because of their addiction to the narcotic painkiller. Although the book series is extremely popular with tweens and even younger elementary-school readers, the movie may be too dark and violent for even mature tween readers.
The violence includes deaths by stabbing, shooting, animal attacks, and poison, as well as torture, threats, and explosions. The language includes "s--t," and one bleeped out use of "f--k" and other expletives. There's more romance in Catching Fire as Katniss struggles with her feelings for both Peeta and Gale. Alcohol is present in a few scenes Katniss takes a drink , and there are references to painkiller addicts.
Katniss is a flawed but excellent role model for teen girls, and the movie offers many discussion points about politics, war, feminism, and materialism.

Peeta Mellark Josh Hutcherson is still hurt by the fact Katniss was only pretending to be in love with him during the Games. But when menacing President Snow Donald Sutherland visits Katniss at home, she threatens the well-being of everyone she loves, including best friend Gale Liam Hemsworth , if she doesn't make everyone believe she and Peeta are deliriously in love during a Victory Tour of the Districts.
Increasingly threatened by Katniss' popularity among the starving masses, Snow eventually decides to make the 75th Annual Hunger Games a unique one -- with the 24 Tributes selected among the living victors.
Unlike earlier games where only one winner remained, Katniss and Peeta both survive after pretending to be in love. Rather than watch them fight to the death, the television audience clamors for them both to live.
Determined to put an end to the rising rebellions, he announces the tributes in the 75th Quarter Quell of the Hunger Games will be chosen from past winners of the game. Having former competitors as the tributes means that unlike the teenaged participants in the first film, these adversaries are all adults. On one hand that makes the violence seem a little less disturbing than watching children kill each other. However, The Hunger Games used quick camera shots to avoid most of the actual impact of the weapons.
In this film audiences see arrows, knives and axes buried into opponents. Characters are shot, poisoned and electrocuted. And as a warning to other possible rebels, a young man is repeatedly flogged in a public square. While the first film felt like Lord of the Flies with terrified teens wildly fighting to preserve their lives, the tributes in this story feel betrayed.
They were told that winning the Hunger Games ensured them a life of wealth and relative freedom from everything—everything that is but the nightmares that haunt their sleep.
Now they are facing the horrors of the games again. On the eve of the event, Caesar Flickerman Stanley Tucci , the host that emcees the televised game, parades each of the contestants across the stage for a final interview. However, Katniss and her costume designer Lenny Kravitz make a defiant stance in front of the entire audience. Yet the idea of sacrificing children for the sake of ratings or control might not be as far-fetched as we would like to believe.
Using fear, intimidation and distraction to keep the districts under his control, President Snow is the master chess player in this game. But the pawns are about to make a move of their own design.
Still, this movie comes with some intriguing insights into the distraction of media, the inequity of wealth and the origins of rebellion. For parents who take the time to watch this sequel with their teens, the film, with a little bit of prompting, might ignite some deep conversations about sacrifice, love and even the role of media.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is rated PG by the MPAA for intense sequences of violence and action, some frightening images, thematic elements, a suggestive situation and language.
Violence: Characters remove a dead animal from a trap.
